Thick Mapping

Extending the analytical scope of mapping in architecture and urbanism

Thick mapping can be defined as an analytical-integrative toolbox that can be used to create, visualise and share a deeper understanding of spatial processes. Thick maps systematically exploit the relational nature of mapping and go beyond the standard repertoire of data collection and content representation. Examples of applications can be found in inter- and transdisciplinary research contexts, critical cartography or urban practice, e.g. to collectively generate local knowledge about socio-spatial relationships and integrate it into planning processes. At the Chair of Sustainable Urbanism, thick maps have been produced as part of urban design projects and exploratory spatial analyses, also in conjunction with elements of situation analysis, in order to represent controversies in the discursive production of space and to better understand the planning context.
