Final projects (thesis) at the Chair of Landscape Architecture and Transformation
Each summer semester the LAT is handing out a project for the Bachelor thesis (8th semester) and all students are required to work on the prepared project theme individually. Due to limited teaching capacities, the coaching of "free" projects is normally impossible in the Bachelor program. Please keep in mind that you have to write a written report in German or English about your project, proving that you are capable to work scientifically on important theoretical questions, linked to the project.

Queranflug 08/26. Transformation of the Airfield in Heidelberg
LAT - summer semester 2026 - Credits: 21 ECTS, including: Module AR71154 "Forschungsdesigns in der LA": 6 ECTS + Bachelor Thesis: 12 ECTS + Kolloquium: 3 ECTS
With its old town, the Neckar meadows and the castle, Heidelberg is one of Germany’s most attractive cities. At the same time, the extensive brownfield sites reveal a completely different side to the city. The withdrawal of the US Army in 2013 freed up 180 hectares, offering great potential for new residential areas, businesses, and cultural and leisure facilities.
This bachelor’s thesis examines the airfield as a central part of this redevelopment landscape. As no firm plans for its future use have yet been established, the site offers a wide range of opportunities for new, forward-looking developments. Across the approximately 15-hectare site, the aim is to highlight its unique landscape qualities, assess the potential role of the airfield within the urban fabric, and develop suitable post-use plans. The objective is to devise viable scenarios for the transformation of this unique site, taking into account ecological, economic and social requirements.
Please note that, in connection with the Bachelor’s thesis, the module AR71154 “Forschungsdesigns in der Landschaftsarchitektur” must be taken. The content of the module (6 ECTS) is linked to the thesis. The aim is for this module to provide students with direct support in successfully completing their thesis. It will therefore start early in the semester, in parallel with the start of the thesis, so that the analytical phase of the thesis project in particular benefits directly from it.

Backnang blau-grün. Neuer Lebensraum an der Murr

Im Jahr 2027 wird die Stadt Stuttgart die zweite Runde der Internationalen Bauausstellung (IBA) aus Anlass des 100-jährigen Jubiläums des Weißenhofs zelebrieren. Während die damalige Ausstellung von 1927 den Fokus auf moderne Architektur und effizientes Wohnen legte, sehen sich die Planer* innen heute mit Herausforderungen wie Nachhaltigkeit und Klimaanpassung konfrontiert. In der StadtRegion Stuttgart, insbesondere in Backnang, hat der Fluss Murr die Stadtlandschaft geprägt und seinen Verlauf sowohl historische Siedlungen als auch Industriegebiete beeinflusst. Schon im Jahr 2020 wurde ein Wettbewerb unter dem Titel "Quartier Backnang West" ausgeschrieben, dessen Ziel darin bestand, die Lebens- und Arbeitsformen im digitalen Zeitalter zu erkunden, mit der Teilnahme von mehr als 110 internationalen Planungsbüros.
Die These widmet sich der kritischen Reflektion der Wettbewerbsergebnisse und der Entwicklung einer geeigneten Planung, die das industrielle Erbe integriert und den Fluss sowohl als Erholungsraum als auch als Antwort auf Hochwassergefahren nutzt.
Bitte beachten Sie, dass in Verbindung mit der Bachelorthesis das neue Modul AR71154 "Forschungsdesigns in der Landschaftsarchitektur“ unbedingt belegt werden sollte. Das Modul (6 ECTS) wird inhaltlich auf die Thesis abgestimmt. Ziel ist es, dass dieses Modul die Studierenden unmittelbar bei der erfolgreichen Bewältigung ihrer Thesis unterstützt. Es wird daher so früh im Semester parallel zum Beginn der Thesis starten, dass insbesondere die analytische Phase des Thesis-Projektes davon unmittelbar profitiert.

Modul AR71154 "Forschungsdesigns in der Landschaftsarchitektur“ (6 ECTS) & Bachelor's Thesis (15 ECTS)
Das Frankfurter Westside-Areal am Mainufer wird bald Frankfurts größter Campus für eine Mischnutzung aus Gewerbe und Industrie. Kreativität, Innovation und Produktivität sind einige der Schlüsselbegriffe, auf denen diese Entwicklung beruht. Ziel der Entwicklung ist es, einen visionären Campus zu schaffen, auf dem industrielle und gewerbliche Aktivitäten eine harmonische Symbiose eingehen. Die Planung der Westside ist bereits im Gange und steht kurz vor der Umsetzung, aber die Westcoast, also das Gebiet entlang des nördlichen Mainufers, ist noch ausbaufähig.
Die LAT-Bachelorthesis dieses Sommersemesters dreht sich um das nördliche Mainufer mit dem Ziel, es wieder in die laufende Stadtplanung zu integrieren. Da das Gebiet aufgrund industrieller Aktivitäten mehrere Jahre lang isoliert war, fehlt es ihm an Verbindungen, Programm und Charakter. In diesem Projekt werden die Studierenden einen neuen Plan für das 12 Hektar große Gelände entlang des Mains entwickeln, Prozesse für klimaangepasste Lösungen untersuchen und testen sowie Konzepte für seine visionäre Zukunft entwerfen.
